Why coffee should rhyme with agroecology and collaboration

The Slow Food Coffee Coalition makes its debut at the World of Coffee
The Slow Food Coffee Coalition (SFCC)—an international network uniting all actors across the coffee supply chain—will participate for the first time in the World of Coffee, the flagship event organized by the Specialty Coffee Association, taking place in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 26–28.
“Our presence at the World of Coffee marks a major milestone for the Coalition,” says Emanuele Dughera, manager of the Slow Food Coalitions. “Following the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Specialty Coffee Association, this event offers us a unique opportunity to share our philosophy. The SFCC champions agroforestry and agroecological practices, promotes the collaboration among stakeholders of the supply chain, protects the environment, and supports small-scale farmers.”
Central to this approach is the adoption of Participatory Guarantee Systems (PGS), which ensure that coffee is produced and traded through transparent, community-driven processes. These systems empower farmers to play an active role in setting quality standards and verifying the authenticity of their products—strengthening the bond between producers, roasters, and consumers.
“These values will be at the heart of both our lecture and exhibition spaces,” Silvia Rota, Coffee Coalition coordinator adds. “Our producers and roasters will be the protagonists.”
In Geneva, the SFCC will bring together producers from Mexico, Honduras, Peru, Thailand, Indonesia, and Colombia, along with roasters from Italy, Switzerland, and Denmark. Their collective presence highlights the Coalition’s commitment to building an international, inclusive, and sustainable coffee network. All day long they will serve their coffee and present their production methods.
In addition to its exhibition and tasting area, the World of Coffee features a dynamic program of discussions and lectures. On June 28, Silvia Rota, Coordinator of the Slow Food Coffee Coalition, Cesar Marin, producer at Chacra D’Dago, Peru, Lee Ayu Chuepa, manager of Akha Ama Coffee, Thailand, and Efraín Lechuga, farmer from Mexico, will lead the session: “Agroforestry Coffee and Participatory Guarantee Systems Initiatives: How the Slow Food Coffee Coalition Members Build a International Network Based on Biodiversity, Transparency and Collaboration”.
