The project is a direct response to the ever-pressing global need to tackle the climate crisis through the lens of culture: it is born from the conviction that culture, especially in the form of cinema, has the power to engage with one of the most critical challenges of our time: environmental sustainability.

  • The Context

    The project takes root in a profound realization that culture is not merely a passive reflection of the world but a dynamic force that can provoke and challenge societal norms and ideals. This understanding, as highlighted in the 2019 report from the World Cities Culture Forum, underscores the importance of culture as a platform for expressing, sharing, and shaping our values.

    The urgency of addressing the climate emergency is met head-on by “Food on Film” through its recognition of cinema as a potent educational tool. Films offer a unique and immersive experience, capable of connecting with audiences on both emotional and intellectual levels. This is especially important for cultivating eco-awareness in people of all ages, as it not only informs but also stirs deep emotional responses. “Food on Film” realizes that cinema serves as a bridge between complex sustainability issues and the hearts and minds of individuals. By humanizing these challenges and offering positive solutions, it inspires viewers to become proactive in their pursuit of a more sustainable future. In a world confronted by climate change and other global crises, the project harnesses the combined strengths of the audio-visual sector and civil society to foster understanding, inspire action, and create a more sustainable world through the medium of film.

  • Main Goals

    The overall goal of the project is to stimulate audience’s interest, especially youths, through a highly inspiring film education format on the strict relation, still very much disregarded, of the impact of food on the pressing issues of environment and climate change. This will be achieved through screenings of selected films and documentaries that deal with this vast subject in parallel with appealing and topic-oriented educational activities that combine digital tools and live experiences. The project specific objectives are:

    • To promote European audiovisual works, through film education, by putting the spotlight on the highly pressing issues of food and environment and through the collaboration of civil society and cultural organizations
    • To stimulate audience’s interest and engagement, especially youths, for the cinema experience and towards its use as a means of expressing their voices
    • To innovate and spread a green cinema experience format by blending digital and live actions to reach diversified audiences and to increase the potential for replication of the project
  • Main Activities

    The format is intricately structured to encompass a dynamic fusion of online and offline components, strategically targeting both schools and wider audiences. By rejuvenating the cinema experience across physical theaters and digital platforms, the project employs a three-pronged strategy.

    Firstly, it seeks to engage schools across five EU countries through an advanced digital platform, delivering films and an innovative educational pathway. Simultaneously, the project introduces a groundbreaking, food-focused format to environmental film festivals, featuring screenings and associated events. This approach is further enriched by the project’s overarching vision—a holistic initiative with explicit objectives. Responding not only to the urgent imperative of addressing climate change through culture but also aiming to promote European audiovisual works, stimulate audience interest, and pioneer innovative green cinema experiences, the project aspires to catalyze positive change. Through this multifaceted approach, it endeavors to inspire future generations to actively engage with the critical issues of food, environment, and climate change, leveraging the influential medium of film for impactful cultural transformation.

     

    The project places a strong emphasis on accessibility and replication, ensuring a broad reach through the Slow Food network, collaborations with environmental festivals, and knowledge-sharing with pertinent stakeholders, including school networks and local authorities. This comprehensive strategy underscores the project’s potential to foster awareness, drive positive action, and create a lasting impact at both local and international levels.
