  • What is healthy soil? From fertility to regeneration

WINEMAKERS ARE AWARE OF IT, AND SO ARE THE EARTHWORMS!

Soil fertility and regeneration are crucial elements for agricultural and environmental sustainability. The fertility of the soil depends on its ability to provide nutrients to plants and support crop growth. However, intensive use of conventional farming practices, such as excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, has compromised soil fertility worldwide. To address this issue, regenerational approaches are needed to promote microbial biodiversity, encourage organic matter, and reduce erosion. Observing, understanding, and planning is essential for agriculture to be able to mitigate climate change. Healthy soil also contributes to this mitigation by storing large amounts of carbon.

    Speakers:

    • Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, soil microbiologists and winemakers. For over 30 years, they have directed the independent analysis laboratory LAMS, providing advice primarily to farmers.
    • Adriano Zago, consultant and trainer, founder and director of Cambium Formazione, the first international biodynamic master for wine and winemaker.

Moderator: Giancarlo Gariglio, Editor of Slow Wine.

This event is free and open to all. We recommend arriving 10 minutes before the start time to secure a seat.

  • From the soil to the glass: nuances of terroir

THE TERM TERROIR REFERS TO A COMBINATION OF NATURAL FACTORS—INCLUDING CLIMATE, SOIL, AND GEOGRAPHY—THAT CONTRIBUTE TO THE DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF AN AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION AREA, ESPECIALLY SO IN THE CONTEXT OF WINEMAKING.

Microbial biodiversity, soil health, geological features, and nutrients influence the unique character of wines produced in a specific location, giving them complexity and distinct nuances. At Slow Wine Fair, we’ll delve into this topic with Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, who have analyzed terroirs worldwide. Don’t miss the chance to meet these two magnificent guests and ask them questions.

    Speakers:

    • Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, soil microbiologists and winemakers. For over 30 years, they have directed the independent analysis laboratory LAMS, providing advice primarily to farmers.

Moderator: Maddalena Schiavone, Slow Wine Coalition focal point.

  • Living soil, living wine

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO REGENERATE THE SOIL? TO CAREFULLY AND LOVINGLY CURATE ITS FERTILITY? WHY IS SOIL SO IMPORTANT, AND WHAT ROLE DOES IT PLAY IN VITICULTURE?

In this meeting, we start from the very basics, from the soil we cultivate, to demonstrate how it absorbs what we introduce into the environment, processes it, and gives it back. When our actions threaten the nature and fertility of the soil, we jeopardize ecosystems, putting our own survival at risk. But by preserving its fertility and regenerating it, we care for the future future of the planet and coming generations.

    Speakers:

    • Lydia and Claude Bourguignon, soil microbiologists. For more than 30 years they have run the independent testing laboratory LAMS, which advises mainly farmers. Among their books, Soil: a heritage to save
    • Francesco Sottile, professor at the University of Palermo and member of the board of Slow Food International. Among his books, Dalla parte della natura.
