Global Food Trade

The global food trade prioritizes profit over fairness and sustainability. Food crosses borders at an unprecedented scale, yet millions—especially in the Global South—face hunger and land loss, while European farmers struggle with low incomes and unfair competition.

As a major trade player, the EU has the power to reshape food systems. While initiatives like the Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategy promote sustainability, trade policies, deregulation, and CAP subsidies still reinforce an unsustainable model. This contradiction fuels economic pressures and instability, as seen in recent farmer protests across Europe.

Trade should support food sovereignty, ecological resilience, and fair livelihoods—not corporate profits. The EU must align trade rules with its climate and social goals, ensuring food systems serve people and the planet, now and for future generations.
