University of Gastronomic Sciences

The application period for the University of Gastronomic Sciences 2004/2005 academic year has expired. Applications for the first year of the three-year training degree in Gastronomic Sciences were accepted from November 1, 2003 to March 25 2004.

“We are very happy with the results achieved so far ,” said Vittorio Manganelli, Director of the Association of Friends of the University of Gastronomic Sciences. “We received 480 applications from students all over the world, a great sign of interest in our initiative.”

Of the 480 applicants, about half are Italian, the majority from the regions of Piedmont, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, not to mention Puglia, Sicily and Lazio. International applications include 70 from the United States, followed by Brazil and Switzerland with 15 applicants each, Japan with 13, and numerous others from Canada, Germany, Finland, Sweden and Great Britain. In total, the University has received applications from students in more than 30 countries around the world including Korea, Israel, Ghana, the Philippines, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Lebanon, Morocco, India, Argentina, Australia and Serbia.

Classes for 60 students will begin on October 4 at the Agenzia di Pollenzo, one of the University’s two campuses. The second campus, located in Colorno, in the province of Parma, will house the future courses of the two-year specialization degrees.

The University of Gastronomic Sciences is moving ahead with the process of official recognition from the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. In March, the deans of the Universities of Piedmont announced their support for the recognition of the University of Gastronomic Sciences, and the Regional Authorities of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna were officially recognized as Founding Members thereof.

“It ‘s a good start” continued Manganelli, “and it demonstrates the validity of the principles on which this new degree is founded: the granting of academic dignity to a subject, gastronomy, that brings together scientific studies with the humanities. The enogastronomic sector has already shown its interest in the project by supporting the setting up of a private, international University, which, we believe, will create new job descriptions valuable not only in Italy, but also throughout the rest of the world.
