The seventh edition of Slow Fish – the international event organized by the Liguria Regional Authority and Slow Food – will be held from Thursday, May 14 to Sunday, May 17, 2015 in the spacious outdoors of Genoa’s Porto Antico (Italy). Dedicated to the world of fish and marine ecosystems, the event once welcomes visitors from Genoa and around the world with free admission, taking place on the docks overlooking the sea. The event ties together the pleasure of food with the protection of biodiversity of marine species.

You can view this year’s highlights by visiting the recently launched website: http://slowfish.slowfood.it/en/.

The theme of this year’s edition is: It’s time to change course! In the year of Expo in Milan – where Slow Food will be participating with its own area -, Slow Food aims to gather all the players involved in protecting the ocean, because saving the ocean is the first step to feeding the planet. This is why Slow Fish 2015 will see the participation of fishers, chefs, consumers, marine biologists, experts and visitors to find solutions to improve the management of the sea’s resources.

Slow Fish 2015 focuses on the Mediterranean Sea and will thus see the participation of Slow Fish delegates from numerous countries, all of whom have the common concern of improving the situation of the Mediterranean Sea. Delegates will arrive in Genoa from 18 countries: France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Albania, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Ireland, Crimea, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Tunisia, South Korea, the Netherlands, and the United States.

The event program focuses on multisensory experiences with tastings and reflections on food culture and tradition: 21 Taste Workshops in which artisans and chefs organize tastings along with marine biologists and fishers. The Taste Workshops tackle important themes such as biodiversity with the support of some of the most famous Italian marine biologists; eight Cooking School lessons held by Master of Food teachers; and four Dinner Dates with stars of Italian and international cuisine.

A new feature for the 2015 edition will be the presence of some 30 producers from the two Ligurian Earth Markets: Cairo Montenotte and Sarzana. In addition, the Genoa Fish Market as well as the event’s Fish Market will offer a rich display of fresh and preserved fish, as well as oils, spices, salts, seaweeds and other fish products.

This year’s edition of Slow Fish will once again offer a conference program with the so-called Water Workshops, which will provide opportunities to look at different issues in their complexity, with open discussions between fishers from all over the world who will share their problems and perspectives, experts talking about issues affecting marine ecosystems and the experience of men and women who are committed to safeguarding the planet. Eight workshopstwo each afternoon – will provide a space for the testimonies, experiences and reflections of representatives from the Slow Fish network who are working to confront the current situation and the future of the Mediterranean ecosystem and fishing.

Visitors will once more get the chance to discover tasty specialties in the Street Food area and enjoy a glass of wine from the Enoteca run by the Pollenzo Wine Bank or an artisanal beer in the Beer Piazza. This year the Beer Piazza is even more impressive, with some of the peninsula’s best artisanal beer, as selected in Slow Food’s beer guide (Guida alle birre d’Italia).

Slow Food involves over a million of people dedicated to and passionate about good, clean and fair food. This includes chefs, youth, activists, farmers, fishers, experts and academics in 158 countries; a network of around 100,000 Slow Food members linked to 1,500 local chapters worldwide (known as convivia), contributing through their membership fee, as well as the events and campaigns they organize; and over 2,500 Terra Madre food communities who practice small-scale and sustainable production of quality food around the world.

Slow Fish. During Slow Fish, held biennially in Genoa (Italy), academics, researchers, small-scale fishers, representatives of public bodies and enthusiasts meet to discuss sustainable fishing and production, responsible fish consumption and the health of marine and freshwater ecosystems. A large market, conferences, meetings, workshops and tasting sessions make Slow Fish a unique event entirely dedicated to the world of fish. The event takes place biennially, in the odd years.
