27 Oct 2002 | English
The project for the major new event Sapore di mare (A Taste of the Sea) was presented at the Salone last night by Maurizio Scaiola, director of the Liguria Agriculture Department, by Roberto Urbani, secretary general of the Genoa Fair Authority, by Piero Sardo, vice-president of Slow Food and representatives of Italy’s chief fishing associations. The initiative will take place at the Genoa Fair Center on a surface area of 30,000 square meters area overlooking the sea.
Liguria is the first Italian region for per capita consumption. Italy boasts 269 mollusk producers and 205 aquiculture enterprises. The sector employs 107,000 people, including 45,000 sea fishermen and boasts sales of 5.5 billion euros.
Slow Food will contribute all its organizational know-how and expertise, staging an enormous fish market featuring the catch of the day landed directly at the Fair, plus traditionally preserved fish from all over the world and eco-sustainably farmed fish. Other attractions will be Slow Food’s sea Presìdia fish-related Master of Food courses, and a series of Taste Workshops .Sapore di mare, which will be allocated a budget of around 1,200,000 euros, will be the largest event ever staged in Italy on the subjects of the sea, fishing and fish. There are already plans to make the event annual, and the 2004 edition will coincide with Genoa’s year as ‘cultural capital of Europe’.
The presentation of the initiative attracted great interest, especially from the Basque Region authorities and Canadian operators, both keen to take part in the event.
