SALONE DEL GUSTO: British Under-Secretary Visits Salone

Yesterday afternoon Lord Whitty, the British under-secretary for Rural Affairs, visited the Salone del Gusto to meet and congratulate the British delegation organized by the Italian section of “Food from Britain”. While he walkwed round the stands he happened to bump into the president of Slow Food Carlo Petrini, who immediately took the opportunity to regale him with the movement’s “gold snail” symbol.. Lord Whitty’s visit concluded with an informal meeting at the British Pub (stand 1). In his speech, he declared his satisfaction for the numerous British presence at the Salone (46 producers), which is second only to that of Italy itself. He was at pains to point out that Britain is not the country oblivious to quality food and drink of popular myth. Judging from the British produce on display at the Salone, he’s not wrong! Food from Britain’s Italian delegate, Nigel Brown, also spoke, stressing how much work his organization has done and acknowledging the importance of the Slow Food movement in Britain. A prime example of all this effort, he said, was the launching of Britain’s first two Presidia: Raw Milk Somerset Cheddar and Irish Smoked Wild Salmon. The get-together was concluded by a brief speech by Carlo Petrini, who thanked Lord Whitty for all his work to promote truly compatible development in Europe.
