The richness of Southeast Asian biodiversity on stage at Terra Madre Salone del Gusto

Organized by Slow Food, the region of Piedmont and the city of Turin, the 11th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto, the most important international event dedicated to food culture, will be held from September 22 to 26, 2016, in Turin, Italy. 7,000 delegates from 143 countries, over 800 exhibitors and 300 Slow Food Presidia will take part in the event.
The International Market at the Valentino Park hosts an area dedicated to showcasing several products from the Slow Food network in Indonesia. Two Terra Madre food communities are attending the event: the rice growers and salt collectors of Krayan and JAVARA, a social enterprise working to keep the biodiversity and cultural heritage of Indonesia’s indigenous food alive. Three Slow Food Presidia are bringing their products to the event for the first time: Cingagoler Honey, dark brown in color, and with aromas of coconut or palm flowers; the Tengkawang Nut Oil, also known as “green butter,” which is extracted from the fruit of a plant native to Borneo; and Heritage Yogyakarta Banana Varieties, which grow in a volcanic area of Java province. They are at the center of traditional cuisine, served fresh, mashed, fried or dried. A tasting of the Cingagoler Honey is instead planned during the workshop Honeys from around the world at the Let it Bee themed space (Sunday 25 September at 10:00 – Rettorato dell’Università degli Studi di Torino, Via G. Verdi 8).
At the Terra Madre Kitchens on Thursday September 22 from 15:00 to 16:00 a tasting is planned of several Ark of Taste rices from different islands of Indonesia.
A selection of Ark of Taste products from the Philippines are displayed – and available for tasting – in a stand in the International Market at the Valentino Park.
At the Terra Madre Kitchens on Friday September 23 from 10:00 to 11:00 there is a slot dedicated to South East Asian coffees, as Ciwidey Arabica and Java Preanger. Ark of Taste coffees from Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor East are offered to the visitors.
On Monday September 26 at the Via del Gelato – Slow Food Presidia Cafeteria (Via Po 35, Turin, from 10:00 to 11:00), another appointment is dedicated to the tasting of Benguet coffee from the Philippines.
At the Terra Madre Kitchens on Thursday 22 September from 17:30 – 19:00 chef Ponpailin Kaewduangdy from Laos prepares dishes of Fried Luang Prabang river weed, spicy tomato and chili dip and pork stuffed with lemongrass, glass noodles and herbs.

The Role of Women in the Food Production (Sunday September 25 from 10:30 to 12:30, Torino Esposizioni, Sala Gialla) – Helianti Hilman, CEO and Founder of Javara, one of Indonesia’s leading purveyors of artisanal products, inspired by the wealth of Indonesia’s biodiversity and the dedication of indigenous farmers.
Oils – A Universe to be Discovered (Sunday September 25 from 10:30 to 12:30, Valentino Castle, Aula Mississipi) – Imanul Huda, Director of PRC Foundation Indonesia, the technical partner for the Tengkawang Fat Presidia.
The World’s Knowledge Safeguarded by the Ark of Taste and the Granaries of Memory (Sunday September 25 from 13:30 to 15:30, Torino Esposizioni, Sala Gialla) – Amaliah Researcher/Academic and owner of KIBO’s food production enterprise.
Indigenous Terra Madre Network: Relationships been Indigenous Communities and Local Governments (Monday September 26 from 13:00 to 15:00, Valentino Park, Indigenous Terra Madre Themed Space) Samuel Samueltipa Pidan, District government official that is leading community and village development work with the Krayan People of Kalimantan, who is also from the Lundayeh Ethnic Group.
