“Can we imagine a standard, a logo or a certification that defends and represents the socio-ecological wealth of artisanal fisheries?
The most popular certification systems are under attack by conservationists, marine experts, some NGOs and even artisanal fishermen themselves. In many cases, these schemes are not rigorous enough and are economically inaccessible to the small-scale fishing sector. But it is also a struggle over values and definitions, over who decides what is and is not “sustainable”. Within the global Slow Food movement, the Slow Fish sustainable fisheries network is building alternatives aimed at creating new markets that value not only the environment, but also artisanal fishers and their communities” states Paula Barbeito.
Slow Fish is the international Slow Food campaign committed to rediscovering the value chain behind fish.
Paula Barbeito is the Slow Fish Coordinator. She believes that the focus of sustainability should not be resources alone, but must also include restoring our social fabric and maintaining participatory and democratic systems. For this reason, she works closely with small-scale fishing communities to protect their right to fish.
