A Walk Around the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre
26 Jul 2012 | English
Let’s take a virtual walk around the areas of the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, trying to describe all that is on offer for visitors from October 25-29. We begin at the Marketplace, which opens its doors to the Terra Madre Food Communities, identifiable by their green stands, where visitors can see the faces and hear the stories of those who have grown, reared and processed unique products with respect for the environment and social justice.
Three pavilions of the Lingotto Fiere Exhibition Centre (1, 2 and 3) are dedicated to the Italian market, with over 200 Slow Food Presidia products, Terra Madre Food Communities and hundreds of exhibitors organised by Italian regions. Each regional area focuses on a particular theme chosen and developed by the Slow Food network present in each region: Puglia is a meeting place for grain and olive oil producers; Lazio concentrates on raising awareness in minimising kitchen waste; Lombardy’s space is dedicated to food education for children and in Sicily, attention is devoted to wine and young winemakers who advocate biological and biodynamic agricultural methods of viticulture and winemaking.
Pavilion 2 is dedicated to the sponsors of the event and to the Slow Food members’ stand, where visitors can attend presentations and conferences in the Agora space or find books published by Slow Food Editore.
The Oval Olympic Arena hosts the international Marketplace, where it is possible to sample hundreds of unique products, meet the protagonists of the Terra Madre network, learn about the projects and campaigns of Slow Food around the world and walk amongst the Slow Food Presidia and Earth Markets stands. During the event, students from the University of Gastronomic Sciences act as Personal Shoppers guiding visitors throughout the market, helping them to discover the gastronomic secrets of the different Italian regions and the history of iconic Italian foods. For people of all ages, Slow Food is organising games and educational activities in the Master of Food and Food and Fun areas, which teach food awareness in consumer choices, stimulate curiosity and permit the rediscovery of the food we eat and its cultural value.
A newcomer at the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre, the Piazza della Pizza, located between pavilion 3 and the Oval, showcases some of the best Italian pizza makers who use Slow Food Presidia products for their pizza. Once again we find the Street Food stands, a culturally authentic way of eating quickly without compromising on taste and quality. This leads us to the Enoteca, also located between the Lingotto and Oval, with more than 1200 Italian labels.
Not to be forgotten are the numerous Conferences, important occasions to discuss the impact of our choices on the future of our planet and our health. With the help of numerous experts, the Conferences address pressing issues from climate change and urban agriculture to renewable resources and animal welfare. Many important debates are taking place in the Oval at the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity area, where international projects and new food communities are being presented.
Our walk around the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre comes to a close at the Oval, with the Foods That Change the World travelling exhibition that arrives in Turin after being displayed in Tours in France, Bilbao in Spain and Riga in Latvia. The exhibition includes a photographic collage of foods from around the world, sensory educational games, a vegetable garden for children, documentary screenings and educational activities to learn how to shop as a more conscientious consumer. The exhibition is made with the use of ecological and recyclable material and is financed by the European Union, within the 4Cities4Dev project (www.4cities4dev.eu), partnered by Slow Food and the other cities involved.
