Following the success of the first edition, Slow Fish — the Sustainable Seafood Salone, is returning to Genoa from November 11 to 13, 2005. A large international event dedicated to the world of seafood and related issues, Slow Fish is organized by Slow Food and promoted by Fiera di Genova with the support of the Liguria Regional Authority and the Genoa Provincial Authority, the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, and the Carige Foundation.
The Terra Madre experience is giving a great boost to this edition of Slow Fish. During that meeting, held in October 2004 at the same time as the Salone del Gusto in Turin, five thousand farmers, fisherpeople and food artisans dedicated to ecologically sustainable food production from 130 different countries, met and discussed issues relating to the production of good, fair and clean food. A network of worldwide contacts was created, which was able to take beneficial advantage of globalization to extend and strengthen the interests of those sharing this philosophy.
At Slow Fish there will be discussions about fish and marine resources. They will involve food communities present at Terra Madre, the associations Lega Pesca (National League of Cooperatives and Mutual Aid Associations), AGCI Pesca (the General Association of Italian Fishing Cooperatives), and Federcoopesca (Confederation of Italian Cooperatives), in addition to leading figures and experts from the sector. The aim is to examine what urgent action needs to be implemented to safeguard this resource, which is so precious but at risk and little protected. The event will therefore also include institutions, represented by the scientific community, and fishermen (through Italian and international associations). A series of seminars will address specific, practical issues, such as the protection of our coasts, a reappraisal of ‘humble’ fish species from lakes and rivers, the global and local seafood economy and worker safety at sea.
On Sunday, November 13 at 11am the event will close with the conference The Sea: a resource and a responsibility. Practices and policies for good, clean and fair fishing.
Visitors will have many stimulating opportunities to taste and to learn through directly experiencing gastronomic specialties based on fish. But Slow Fish is not only directed at consumers. In line with the Slow Food philosophy, it strives to stimulate interest and awareness. It endeavors to provide opportunities for reflection, discussion and information, interwoven with tasting and conviviality.
Visitors to Slow Fish will be able to explore the following areas
The Knowledge Route: an educational experience involving all the senses. An opportunity to better understand issues surrounding the marine environment and fishing, finishing off with a tasting session. The route features more than twenty encounters, rounded off with top Italian and international chefs interpreting what the sea, lakes, rivers and lagoons can offer us.
The Bazaar: fisherpeople from Vila do Bispo, Dakar and Dalyan… the food communities and other exhibitors will meet each other and visitors to Slow Fish. They will get to know each other and promote their artisanal produce. Visitors will receive a warm welcome and discover a rich array of aromas and colors in the market.
The Bistro: an inviting and convivial setting taking visitors round the many flavors of the marine world. The Bistro will offer enticing products from the sea and fresh water, prepared to perfection by skillful chefs. Each dish will be accompanied by useful information to help appreciate it to the full and there will, of course, be wines from the Slow Fish Enoteca.
Local areas: Every local area expresses the wealth of its resources through flavors, knowledge and traditions. Various Italian and international regions will be present at Slow Fish to introduce visitors to their traditional local food and wines. Through the flavors of their traditional dishes they will portray the wealth of their cultural heritage and efforts to develop and recognize its value.
The educational initiative Fish Tales has been designed for young people. Here a simulation of fishing for tuna, sardine and cod will help them understand where the fish on their plate comes from and they will appreciate something about fish quality, problems and curiosities.
