99 engaging people in grassroots food work and creative sectors
Turin, Italy: Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN), in collaboration with Casa Jasmina and Hivos, will host a social-design workshop, the SFYN Tank, on September 24th, during Terra Madre Salone del Gusto 2016. Ninety-nine people from from 33 different countries will work together to innovate solutions to 9 global food problems. Through open-exchange of expertise, food-producers, social entrepreneurs, chefs, product-designers and other creatives will engage in collective problem-solving accompanied by issue-coaches and life-line experts.
By inviting an interdisciplinary mix of thinkers, makers, and doers from around the world we believe that we can come up with solutions for specific issues, such as the common problem for many livestock farmers to have access to easy affordable, hygienic, and certified slaughterhouses. “Design-thinking can… allow you to sort of interrogate that problem and come up with a really clever solution.” – Nigel Akehurst, 3rd generation UK farmer and founder of IndieFarmer.com
As a real-world testbed for hacks, experiments and innovative Internet of Things, Casa Jasmina togheter with Hivos, who has years of experience in putting citizens at the centre of finding solutions to local food challenges in their “Food Labs”, will bring the necessary knowledge to the table to make SFYN Tank a succes. “It’s usually a struggle to have all the stakeholders [in one place] because food is so… interdisciplinary… and [the SFYN Tank] helps to solve this particular problem.” – Zayaan Khan, botanist, socio-political worker, and co-coordinator of Slow Food Youth Network South Africa

About Casa Jasmina: Casa Jasmina is a two-year pilot project in the business space of domestic electronic networking, or, “the Internet of Things in the Home.” Our goal is to integrate traditional Italian skills in furniture and interior design with emergent skills in Italian open-source electronics. The project is a showplace inside the large industrial building already shared by Toolbox Co-Working, Fablab Torino and Officine Arduino.
About Hivos: Hivos is an international organisation that seeks new solutions to persistent global issues. With smart projects in the right places, we oppose discrimination, inequality, abuse of power and the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. Counterbalance alone, however, is not enough. Our primary focus is achieving structural change. This is why we cooperate with innovative businesses, citizens and their organisations. We share a dream with them of sustainable economies and inclusive societies.
