Slow Food Founder Carlo Petrini visited London 4-5th December for the first stop in a global series to launch 10,000 Gardens in Africa.
The project which takes the original scheme from 1000 gardens to 10,000 will eventually support 500,000 Africans in some of the poorest countries on the planet.
The antithesis of regular food aid, the project supports communities to grow their own traditional foods, and retain their own food sovereignty.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation has commented on the value of the project, and has highlighted how it has ensured that a number of communities in Ebola areas have continued to be able to eat whilst their markets have been closed to prevent people congregating in public.
As part of his visit, Petrini visited Northbank Restaurant located next to the Millennium Bridge, chosen by Director of England, Shane Holland to reflect his Cornish Heritage. Northbank selects the very best British ingredients and has a strong Cornish influence from proprietor, Christian Butler’s homeland.
Head Chef Jason Marchant was delighted to cook for Petrini and stated “We work hard to source the best British ingredients and endeavour to showcase traditional Cornish food and drinks from artisan producers on our menus such as hogs pudding and mead”.
