Over fifty journalists attend the presentation of Slow Food’s October events
Over 50 journalists braved the pouring rain to make it to the June 22 press conference for the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre held in the heart of Manhattan, at New York University’s Casa Italiana. The conference was presented by Slow Food and the Piedmont Regional Authority.. In attendance were journalists from both American and overseas newspapers and magazines, including the London Times, La Stampa, Saveur and US Front Line.
Erika Lesser, Director of Slow Food USA, opened the conference and introduced the movement’s International President Carlo Petrini and Gipo Farassino, Piedmont regional spokesman for Cultural Identity and a well-known actor and singer.
Petrini spoke on the importance of biodiversity and Slow Food’s role in protecting not only endangered foods, but also the human element or food communities that are also at risk of disappearing.
He explained how the Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre play a strategic role in Slow Food’s aims. His speech was expertly translated by journalist Corby Kummer. Gipo Farassino went on to speak about Piedmont’s historic partnership with Slow Food.
The conference was followed by a tasting of some of the American products that will make an appearance at the Salone del Gusto: artisan cheeses from three different states and several types of micro-brewed beers.
