A Guided Tour of Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2014: Stop-over Four

We end our journey through the diversity of Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2014 with a stop by the Fountain of Youth, then on for a stay in the bountiful Balkans, and finish with a sail on the Ark.

Young, hungry and restless!

The energy they are generating both here at the event and in their everyday work is addictive. Presenting: the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN), which was founded to make youth familiar with Slow Food’s philosophy that all food should be good, clean and fair. The international network gathered once again at Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre this year and brought together a packed agenda of conferences, talks, workshops and… parties. They are restless, and hungry for change.

The bountiful Balkans

Even if the Balkans’ population is still more engaged in agriculture than in the rest of Europe, it has not avoided the rural exodus of people into cities. A phenomenon that threatens the traditional agricultural practices, the rich food culture, as well as the breathtaking landscapes that the Balkans is overflowing with. Protecting the rich heritage in a land marked by the legacy of communism and political conflict is not easy.

Biodiversity is beautiful!

The boat-like 600 square meter space of the Ark of Taste – Slow Food’s catalogue of endangered foods – has become the centerpiece of this year’s Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre. Over the days, the shelves have filled up with the hundreds of products brought by Terra Madre communities and Slow Food members from around the world. The area is buzzing with the stories of these foods, captured by the BBC Radio Four who interviewed 100 people from 50 countries about products in the Ark of Taste. These stories will form part of a show that airs every Sunday at 12.30 (GMT). Meanwhile, you can have a sneak peek at some of these products rooted in the cultures, history and traditions from all over the world.
