30TH APRIL: WORLD DISCO SOUP DAY

On Saturday 30th April, activists of Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) from all over the world will participate in a global campaign against food waste. Slowly but steady, public events are allowed again, which means this year’s 6th edition of World Disco Soup Day (WDSD) is taking place in different forms: individually or with friends, at the comfort of a kitchen or in a public space.

Find here the updated map of participants:

On April 30th we will share the highlights of local events on our social media- Instagram @worlddiscosoupdayFacebook Page

Furthermore, from 1.30 PM to 3 PM CEST we will have an open call that all participants can join : https://meet.google.com/msz-zmuy-rhk

We have created a shared Spotify playlist that everyone can listen to, while celebrating their collective or individual Disco Soups: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4kpxdeCOaIVSzp85ImC1tw

A broader perspective: climate change and our diets

World Disco Soup Day is SFYN’s largest collective effort to combat food waste and climate change. It is the day when the SFYN communities organize parties and turn food waste into a Disco Soup. It is an event to cook, eat and dance together, showing a fun way to save food, but also to seriously reflect on the amount that goes to waste and on the solutions we all have at hand.

“This year we focus on a broader perspective: our main goal will be to raise awareness on the current climate crisis and how we can have a positive impact with our diets” says Jorrit Kiewik, SFYN executive director. ”Before the special day, we welcome everyone to inspire people around us. Food waste reduction and a (more) plant-based diet are two powerful tools to reduce our climate footprint. This year for the whole month of April we will challenge ourselves to avoid wasting any food and to eat more plant-based proteins.”

One Month #recipeforchange challenge

We created a four-week program, filled with topics, themes and challenges to warm you up for World Disco Soup Day on April 30th. The first week was focused on how to make a shopping list, buying ‘ugly’ vegetables, storing methods and cooking zero-waste. The week after, people were encouraged to explore new conservation methods, like fermentation, and to learn how to use leftovers. Week three is all about getting creative with pulses and veggies and sharing recipes with each other. In week four, we get ready for the actual World Disco Soup Day. Until now around 100 people officially registered from 31 countries.

The faculty of gastronomy at the UPAEP University in Puebla, Mexico has joined the campaign with a series of trainings for the students and also livestreams on food waste reduction and composting.

Throughout the pandemic the efforts of the global Disco Soup movement were bundled into the Disco Soup Cookbook: a collection of about 100 recipes from all over the world, created by our SFYN activists. This year the book is used as a resource for recipes with leftovers, food scraps and traditional preservation and fermentation methods, but also interviews and stories of the people that made World Disco Soup Day possible.

The Road to Terra Madre

This event is part of The Road to Terra Madre, a series of initiatives organized by the Slow Food network around the world to pave the way towards the international gathering which takes place in Turin, Italy, from September 22-26 and where participants will design the future of food together.

Background and more information about World Disco Soup Day

Disco Soup started 9 years ago in Berlin, Germany, as Schnippeldisko, a “protest soup” against food waste that fed 8,000 people. Since then, Disco Soup events have spread across the world as a fun, meaningful way to bring this crisis into focus. Many different editions have taken place. Each Disco Soup event was individually run, relying on local volunteers to organize every detail, until 2016, when SFYN Brazil organized a national Disco Soup Day.

From 2016 until now, every year the last Saturday of April we have celebrated World Disco Soup Day. In each edition we had hundreds Disco Soups organized all over the world and about 50.000 kg of food saved. The 2020 and 2021 were hybrid editions due to the pandemics, so people had the chance to join the campaign individually and make a Disco Soup in their homes with their own leftover food.

The Slow Food Youth Network is a group of young people, ages 18-32, who have come together and connected through this network and through their support for the holistic and inspiring philosophy of Slow Food. The network reaches all over the world to youth in 80 different countries. This network includes people from a variety of backgrounds, cultures, and demographics, all of whom share a common goal: to contribute to a better food system.
