Our Impact

“I’ll never forget my first involvement with Slow Food. It was 2008, and I had been invited to talk at Terra Madre – an event that brings people together from all around the world to share solutions for improving our food system. The experience was electrifying, regenerative and inspirational, giving me the impetus to return to Uganda and strengthen my local network. ”

Edward Mukiibi, Slow Food President

We are at the forefront of humanity’s greatest challenge, and our efforts to secure more sustainable food systems through biodiversity, education and advocacy will determine how we navigate the climate crisis.

Slow Food has had a significant impact across all three pillars of action. We have cataloged 5795 products at risk of extinction by onboarding them onto our Ark of Taste, galvanized more than 68,0000 members in 160 countries to inspire broader behavioral change, and planted over 4000 gardens in Africa.

But the real impact of Slow Food goes beyond the numbers. Our movement’s strength lies in our message to secure good, clean and fair food, in the relationships we cultivate with our international community, and in the focus of our policy to provide producers with a platform.

Below are just a few examples of how Slow Food and its partners are sowing the seeds of change around the world, and nurturing the palate while nourishing the planet.

Our impact stories

What they say about us

“I have been very impressed by the Slow Food movement. It is about celebrating the culture of food, of sharing the extraordinary knowledge, developed over millennia, of the traditions involved with quality food production, of the sheer joy and pleasure of consuming food together. Especially within the context of family life, this has to be one of the highest forms of cultural activity.”

- King Charles III

“Flavor was the most important thing to me, and the Slow Food movement is connecting with these organic farmers that made Chez Panisse what it is. It’s not just about California, but about the local rightness of food. It’s understanding the big picture of farming, and how it addresses climate and health. Eating should be a seasonal experience.”

- Alice Waters

“The consistent and credible position of Slow Food as an organization that is looking for change on behalf of grass roots Food System Stakeholders gives it a distinctive position and has helped it to influence the ongoing development of European food and farming policies.”

- Ian Baker, Catalys.org

“The support from Slow Food over the years has been consistent and critical; without them, we would have given up.”

- Claudia Rânja, Slow Food România Gardens educator in Târgu Mureș, Romania

“The biocultural heritage of indigenous and local communities is a central component in addressing the planet’s socio-environmental crisis. As an evaluation team, we believe that Slow Food is working to fulfill its commitment to improve the social, economic, and health conditions of the communities that adopt its projects through culturally appropriate activities that promote food sovereignty based on the revaluation of biocultural elements. The results of our evaluation of the activities carried out in Mexico confirm the impact of Slow Food’s activities on the revaluation of practices and knowledge related to production systems that promote the in situ conservation of agrobiodiversity, closely associated, while also ensuring the gradual adaptation of agricultural diversity to adverse climatic conditions, through the promotion of diversified landscape management and the empowerment of participating groups”.
