Germany Brings Culinary Diversity and a Strong Network to Terra Madre Salone del Gusto

Terra Madre Salone del Gusto, the most important international event dedicated to food culture, will take place in Turin, Italy, from September 20 to 24, 2018.

Together with six exhibitors, Slow Food Germany will have a strong presence at the 12th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto. Ninety delegates will represent the German Terra Madre Network during the event.

Organized by Slow Food and the Region of Piedmont and the City of Turin in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Terra Madre Salone del Gusto is a merging of Salone del Gusto (an international fair for quality food) and Terra Madre, the meeting point for traditional, small-scale producers from the international Slow Food network. In a diverse series of forums, workshops, and lectures, environmental and agricultural policy, fisheries, food waste, animal husbandry and meat consumption, climate change, and food culture and consumption will be discussed.

This year, for the very first time, Germany will be represented at the International Market with its own designated stand. The space will include information about Slow Food Germany and the agricultural production group Schwäbisch Hall, and the public will be able to taste and buy various products. The Clemens Härle brewery, Andechser Dairy, Fickenschers Bakery, Hohenloher Holunderzauber, and German Garclic Smokehouse are among the exhibitors. German artisanal products such as bread, ham, and beer will be presented. “Terra Madre is a network of committed producers and activists from all walks of life who want the food system to be sustainable and, therefore, show their greatest dedication to this cause. It is thus with great satisfaction that we present German culinary diversity at Terra Madre Salone del Gusto,” said Ursula Hudson, president of Slow Food Germany, about the upcoming event in Turin.

Among the approximately 90 German Terra Madre delegates there are artisan producers, small-scale farmers, breeders of heritage animal breeds, beekeepers, herders, graduates from the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo, innovative entrepreneurs in food production and marketing, and members of the Slow Food Youth Network. During the event, the public will have the opportunity to learn about hot topics in the world of food, network with delegates from other countries, and exchange ideas on topics relevant to them. Some portraits of the delegates and a complete list of all participants can be found here.

At the Slow Food Germany stand, visitors can find out a about the association’s educational projects and can get involved in hands-on learning activities on the topics of soil, legumes, and food waste.
With so-called “root boxes”, the stand offers an in-depth study of soil, climate, and root-growth: Sackets filled with various substances trigger the visitors’ sense of smell and touch, allowing them to experience food with all their senses. An exhibition of legumes will show that these are a valid alternative to the consumption of animal products.

Terra Madre thematic Forums are presented by delegates of the network and are open to the public as long as seats are available.
