• Junior Food Advocacy Officer based in Brussels

  Slow Food is a global grassroots organization that envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them, good for those who grow it and good for the planet. Slow Food involves over a million activists, cooks, experts, youth, farmers, fishers and academics in over 160 countries.  

  Slow Food’s advocacy team aims at translating the Slow Food network’s grassroots actions into policy advocacy at the global, European, and local level, calling for policies that promote sustainable food systems, and raising awareness about various aspects of food production, agriculture, fisheries, and their effects on biodiversity, animal welfare, human health, and climate change.  

  JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY 
  The food advocacy officer will be responsible for implementing the advocacy team’s activities primarily in relation to food and farming policies at local (urban) EU and International, including policies relating to sustainable food systems governance, agriculture, public procurement, animal welfare and farming, climate change, involving the colleagues in the Brussels Office and in the international headquarters in Italy, as well as experts and members from the Slow Food network.  The officer will also oversee EU level projects. 

  Key responsibilities 

  • Contribute to the implementation of the strategic priorities and work program of Slow Food  

  • Contribute to define and implement successful advocacy strategies for a transition towards agroecological food systems at the local, EU and international level, leveraging the Slow Food grassroots network 

  • Monitor and report on relevant policy developments and provide background information to the other team members and Slow Food’s network 

  • Establish and maintain strategic relationships with relevant stakeholders and partner organizations 

  • Represent Slow Food in relevant fora (e.g. stakeholder consultation groups, conferences) 

  • Plan, execute and implement advocacy actions aimed at policymakers and other stakeholders including public facing campaigns and mobilizing Slow Food’s network 

  • Organize and run joint actions in cooperation with other partner organizations 

  • Draft and disseminate policy briefs and position papers on relevant issues  

  • Coordinate and implement project related activities, including budgeting and reporting   

  • Organisation of events, webinars, conferences, training  

  • Contribute to the efficient organization of the office activities including internal meetings and administrative tasks 

  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of advocacy work 

  • Contribute to fundraising efforts (e.g. grant applications) 

  Profile 

  • Relevant academic degree (including agronomic, environmental or political sciences) 

  • 1-2 years of work experience in relevant fields (NGO, institutions, research) 

  • Experience with working in partnership with other stakeholders 

  • Excellent grasp of the functioning of EU institutions, a good understanding of how to effectively influence EU policies 

  • Experience in advocating for a transition towards more sustainable food systems 

  • Ability to advocate effectively and to communicate in an articulated manner to a wide range of audiences both in writing and orally 

  • Experience in formulating recommendations, research information and monitor policy processes 

  • Excellent English language written skills (native speaker or equivalent) 

  • Good networking abilities and interpersonal skills for an international environment 

  Assets 

  • Experience in communicating with volunteers and engaging them 

  • Language skills in addition to English (esp. Spanish, French, Italian) are a plus 

  • Interest in food and agriculture

  WORKING CONDITIONS 

  Terms of employment: 

  One year fixed-term contract (CDD) with possibility of renewa

  The job is based in Brussels. Flexible tele-work is possible upon agreement with the employer. 

  Applicants must – due to legal reasons – hold EU citizenship or valid EU residence permit and a valid Belgian or EU work permit. Applications not meeting these conditions can unfortunately not be considered. 

  Remuneration package

  The gross salary is for an advocacy junior officer position with 1-2 years experience, and in line with that of an NGO, on the basis of the full-time job (typically 38 hours per week).
