Some 115 Peruvian dishes are competing to be one of the “Seven Gastronomic Wonders of Peru”, in a contest launched on Tuesday to boost Peruvian cuisine variety as well as promote gastronomic tourism in the country.
The Peruvian minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Mercedes Aráoz, launched this competition in which Peruvians and people from all over the world will have the chance to vote for their favorite dish.
Dishes included in the competition are representative of Peru’s different regions, their cultures and traditions. Peruvian cuisine is considered one of the most diverse in the world, combining the flavors of four continents thanks to its pre-Incas and Inca heritage and to Spanish, African, Japanese, Chinese and finally Italian, French and British immigration.
The Economist described Peru as having one of the world’s dozen or so great cuisines, while at the Fourth International Summit of Gastronomy Madrid Fusión 2006, Lima was declared the “Gastronomic Capital of the Americas”.
The seven Peruvian gastronomic wonders will voted on by the public on the website www.7maravillasgastronomicas.com which lists all dishes, with photographs and descriptions.
