First offical Slow Food conference in Iran

Slow Food holds its first official conference titled “First International Gastronomic Tourism & Slow Food” today, January 30th 2017, in the Hotel Misagh, Mashhad, Iran, from 8:30 to 11:30 am.

The conference will offer an opportunity to learn more about Slow Food and to understand how its philosophy can be best applied in Iran, both in terms of food biodiversity preservation and promotion, and in terms of supporting small-scale artisan food producers.

Michele Rumiz from Slow Food International will be attending the conference, alongside Ms. Shohreh Poodineh, leader of Slow Food Pars, Dr. Manoochehr Jahanian, Dean of the Faculty of Tourism Sciences at Tehran University of Science and Arts, Dr. Amir Salari, Assistant Professor and Director of Nutrition at Ferdowsi University in Mashhad, and Dr. Farid Javaherzadeh, Head of the Tourism Department of Binalood (University of Mashhad).

Slow Food is not new in Iran; its first convium was established back in 2011, and there is a long history of Terra Madre delegations representing projects and food communities from throughout the country. However, it has recently increased its activity thanks to the support of 3 new local convivia, namely in Semnan, Tehran, and Ghaemshahr.

The first visit of Slow Food International will also serve to boost the development of the Ark of Taste project – the online catalogue of endangered food products from across the globe, as well as in identifying possible Slow Food Presidia projects.

The conference is organized by Slow Food Pars in cooperation with the Office of Cultural Heritage & Tourism in Mashhad.
