Why Slow Food is Stepping Away from X
03 May 2025

Today, on World Press Freedom Day, Slow Food announces that we will no longer publish content on X (formerly Twitter).
This is not a decision we have taken lightly. As a global movement committed to building a good, clean, and fair food system, we believe that free, truthful, and respectful communication is essential to democracy, civil society, and social justice. Without access to reliable information, people cannot make informed choices about the food they eat—or the world they live in.
Unfortunately, X has become a space where freedom of speech is increasingly distorted. Under its current leadership, the platform has moved away from protecting free expression and towards amplifying disinformation, hate speech, and harmful propaganda. When press freedom is undermined by lies and manipulation, the right to speak freely loses meaning. As philosopher Hannah Arendt warned, “If everyone lies to you all the time, the consequence is not that you believe the lies, but rather that no one believes anything anymore.”
Remaining on X would mean accepting and legitimizing a platform where the conditions for real freedom of speech no longer exist. We refuse to do so.
Slow Food’s Code of Ethics calls us to stand with those who are silenced, misrepresented, or targeted by systems of oppression. Today, that includes resisting the normalization of toxic digital environments that profit from division and disinformation.
We will continue to nurture dialogue, debate, and dissent—but in spaces where truth, dignity, and inclusion are not up for sale.
This is why, from today, we will no longer post content on X. You can still find us on Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and Bluesky!
