In an inspiring ceremony on the opening day of Terra Madre 2024, Umar Oschen Bashir from Uganda was announced as the recipient of the prestigious Ursula Hudson Award

27 Sep 2024

This award, established in memory of the late Ursula Hudson, the beloved President of Slow Food Germany and a close friend of Slow Food’s founder Carlo Petrini, celebrates the exceptional contributions of activists who embody Slow Food’s values and advocacy.

The second edition of the award was introduced by Marta Messa, Secretary General of Slow Food, with founder Carlo Petrini, Edie Mukiibi, President of Slow Food International, and Rubert Ebner, the current President of Slow Food Germany, in attendance. Mukiibi had the honor of presenting the award to Bashir, recognizing his outstanding work as the leader of the Slow Food community group *Toyoro Kongokinyinyir Nopimpim* or “Survive With Your Sweat.”

Bashir’s project, based in the Karamojong sub-region of Uganda, focuses on combating food insecurity in an area prone to drought by developing community gardens. Through *Survive With Your Sweat*, Bashir and his team have empowered local communities to sustainably grow their own food, ensuring resilience in the face of climate challenges.

The Ursula Hudson Award, which includes a 5,000-euro prize, will support Bashir in furthering his critical work in Uganda, ensuring that his advocacy continues to thrive and make a lasting impact.

The Slow Food movement remains deeply inspired by Ursula Hudson’s legacy, and through this award, her memory continues to illuminate the path for future generations of activists like Bashir.
