Slow Food is pleased to announce the first edition of the SlowPack prize 2012, held as part of Salone del Gusto 2012, open exclusively to the food producers both from Italy and the rest of the world who exhibit their products at the event.

Food packaging represents an enormous source of the world’s waste. The life cycle of goods can be long or short, but after its use, that of the packaging is always short: immediately becoming a piece of urban trash. In addition, the emissions generated directly and indirectly during the different phases of the good’s lifespan is an issue to be considered.

This contest aims to encourage producers at the event to reflect on the impact that non-eco-friendly packaging has on the environment and on the flavor, aroma, and safety of their products, while awarding those who use environmentally friendly packaging.

The SlowPack Prize 2012 is divided into 4 categories:
Traditional techniques and materials: This award will recognize a form of packaging that consists of materials that recover a traditional way of packaging and conservation, based on traditional techniques that use natural, local, biodegradable and recyclable materials.
Innovative techniques and materials: This award will recognize a form of packaging that is both eco-friendly and eco-sustainable, made with innovative, reusable, recyclable and biodegradable materials that are derived from efficient production processes from an energy point of view, with low levels of harmful emissions.
Communication of the product’s quality: This award will recognize a label that is particularly communicative, that contains the necessary information to help the consumer completely understand the characteristics that distinguish the product from the competition by describing, for example, the traceability of its ingredients, the history of the product or its uniqueness, and indicating the correct way to reuse or dispose of the packaging.
Chain of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging: This award will recognize a label whose choice of all levels of packaging fully respects the environment.

The prizes for the 4 categories are
:
for Traditional techniques and materials: a discount equal to € 1,950 (taxes included) off the price of exhibition space at Salone Internazionale del Gusto 2012.
for Innovative techniques and materials: a package of chemical analyses and consultation by the Chemical Laboratory of the Turin Chamber of Commerce worth up to € 500, to be used in 2013.
