Slow Food in Action

Italian-American video producer Donata Defilippi Renfrow (Atlanta, GA) loves telling the stories of farmers and food artisans and how they are building the global sustainable food movement. In this short documentary, Terra Madre: Slow Food in Action she follows the Terra Madre 2010 world meeting of food communities to explain the mission and spirit of Slow Food.

In just nine minutes, the film give us an insight into the feel, look and thinking of the event and worldwide network that comes together for these few days. It pans across meetings among beekeepers, fishers and other artisan food producers; the involvement of young people through the Youth Food Movement; the opening and closing sessions; and examples of how the network works to support the development of local economies around the world. Such is the case with third-generation Italian flour miller Fausto Marino, who tells us how his family has assisted small-scale producers in Peru – just one of the many voices featured in the production, which is primarily narrated.

“It is one small attempt,” Donata said, “to help more people to understand why this movement is critical to the health of our bodies, our economies, and our earth.”
