Save Biodiversity, Save the Planet: Slow Food at Expo

20 Mar 2015

During a press conference held today in Milan, Slow Food officially revealed its plans for Expo 2015 and unveiled a new section of the website dedicated to the presence of Slow Food at the event.

The theme of Expo 2015, to be held in Milan from May 1 to October 31, is Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. In Slow Food’s opinion, no other topic is more important than food, nutrition and the need to guarantee access to good, clean, and fair food for everyone. Participating in Expo means sharing the experience of our movement with a huge number of people. Notwithstanding some reservations, the association decided to take up this opportunity.

Throughout the event, Slow Food will have a 3300m2 space designed by Herzog & de Meuron, one of the world’s most famous architecture studios. Its aim is to explain the significance of biodiversity in the context of the bigger picture of the global food system and demonstrate why it is so important to preserve it.

The Slow Food area consists of three entirely wooden structures whose shape evokes the typical farmhouses of Lombardy’s rural landscape. The sustainable structures can be easily disassembled, moved and reused somewhere else after the event closes.

Another big announcement was made during the press conference: From October 3-6, the Slow Food Youth Network plans to bring several thousand young Terra Madre delegates from around the world to Milan to give a starring role to the young people working in food production: farmers, food artisans, fishers, nomads, Indigenous Peoples, chefs, students and activists.

As we take on this six-month-long adventure, we will keep you updated through our different communication channels. We also look forward to welcoming many of you there.
