Love the Earth, Defend the Future – You Did It!

17 Feb 2017

Five hundred people from 50 countries answered the call, donating 40,000 Euros.

Thanks to you, our donors and members, we were able to bear the cost of an important part of Slow Food’s 2016 activities. Each year, Slow Food works around the world to protect biodiversity, build links between producers and consumers, and raise awareness of some of the most pressing topics affecting our food system. But to accomplish all of this, we needed you.

Take a look at what you helped us achieve in 2016:

GARDENS IN AFRICA: fresh and healthy food for schools and communities

In 2016 we created 597 new gardens in 17 African countries, reaching a total number of 2607 vegetable gardens (including 1200 school and 1407 community). 2300 people were involved in intensive training programs: on agroecological techniques, the management of land, water, and seeds.

ARK OF TASTE: a global directory of traditional products at risk of disappearing

In the course of 2016, we published 1181 product entries from 95 countries around the world.

The 10 countries that have seen the most new entries on the Ark in 2016 are: France (172), Brazil (76), Peru (74), China (44), Mexico (39), United States (38), United Kingdom (36), South Africa (30), Australia (29), Chile (28).

SLOW FOOD PRESIDIA: good practices that save biodiversity and improve local economies

In 2016 we launched 45 new Presidia, now totaling 514 active Presidia in 67 countries. Countries that started new Presidia in 2016 are: Austria (3), Belgium (2), Brazil (1), Bulgaria (1), Canada (1), Colombia (1), Indonesia (3), Italy (17) , Macedonia (1), Mexico (6), Peru (1), United Kingdom (1), Czech Republic (1), Romania (1), South Africa (1) Tanzania (1), Uganda (3).

SLOW FOOD CHEFS’ ALLIANCE: bringing farm products into the restaurants

In 2016 the Chefs’ Alliance was established in Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Kenya, Uganda, India, Belgium, France, Germany, and Russia. Today, this project involves 700 chefs in 15 countries.

EARTH MARKETS: shortening the distance between producers and consumers

In 2016 new Earth Markets were started in Chile (4), Italy (5), Latvia (1), Spain (1), Turkey (1), Uganda (1). Today, there are 59 Earth Markets in 17 countries.

Only biodiversity will ensure good, clean and fair for all, without destroying the planet. Intensive farming, based on just a few varieties grown with chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and only a few animal breeds reared with industrial methods hurts the environment and our health.

The donations were collected by the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity, the body that promotes and coordinates projects around the world in defense of biodiversity.
