How Do I Love Thee, Food

The Slow Food Berwick-on-Tweed Convivium, in conjunction with the Northumberland Library Service, launched a literary competition yesterday as one of the events to celebrate the UK ‘National Year of Reading’.

The initiative, which asks locals to write a short story or poem on the subject of ‘Celebrating Local Food’, was presented at nearby Heatherslaw Mill, a working water mill which stone-grinds homegrown wheat to make wholemeal flour.

The competition is split into two categories: one for adults and another for children of 16 and under. Entry forms are available from libraries in north Northumberland and donwloadable from the Northumberland Libraries or Ford & Etal websites.

Prizes include visits to local producers involved in the Slow Food movement and selections of local food specialities. The closing date for entries is Monday, June 30, and prizes will be presented at the Berwick Food Festival (September 12-14).

The jury will be made up of retired teachers, members of Borders Organic Gardeners and local author Jennifer Doherty.

The Slow Food Kapiti Convivum in New Zealand is also in a literary vein this year.

In February, for its ‘Slow Food Literary Awards’, it asked members ‘to present their innermost feelings about the essence of Slow Food … in the genre of a Sonnet, in its correct form and alternate forms’.

The topic was ‘In the Praise of Food’ and food had to be addressed as if it were a person.
