Granny’s Treasures

Slow Food France and the Slow Food Paris-Bastille Convivium are holding a ‘Family Treasures’ recipe competition as part of Eurogusto 09, a meeting of cooks, winegrowers, farmers and young people from all over Europe to be held in Tours, France in November. The contest asks people from across the world to submit a treasured recipe, which has been passed down in their family.

The goal is to collect and publish online the best of these ‘Grannys’ recipes’ which are often economical and are well-suited to times of a financial crisis. They are often not written down but passed from generation to generation and are considered a form of wealth – to be kept safe in the family. Entries must contain only affordable ingredients and be easy enough to be made by a non-professional cook.

The recipes will be judged, among other factors, on the story of the person who handed down the recipe and how the recipe was passed down through the family. Entries will be judged by a panel including Michelin-starred chefs, a dietitian, a food historian, and Slow Food members. Prizes will be awarded on the Sunday of Eurogusto and the three best recipes will be served at a meal for Terra Madre for Young Europeans, an international movement of Slow Food youth.
