Eating for Ireland
01 Sep 2009

Ireland’s first ever Eat-In in will be held this Sunday, 6 September at the Electric Picnic music festival in Stradbally, Co. Laois. The concept of an Eat-In involves a group of people gathering in public to share a locally-produced, organic, seasonal meal with conversation and conviviality. So far, the idea has been very successful around Europe and America, with meals being held in high profile venues across the globe. The purpose is to raise awareness about food, the power of consumers to make choices around food and to create a snapshot of how food should be enjoyed and appreciated.
This Sunday’s Eat-In will take a different format, where instead of participants bringing food, a smorgasbord of fresh, local and organic produce will be provided by Irish producers who are part of the Slow Food network. Punters will eat from ceramic plates, with real cutlery and use their reusable glasses in a statement on waste. The menu includes a whole free range, spit-roasted, suckling pig served with pickles, homemade mayo, dressed greens, and artisanal breads, wood baked thin crust pizza, salads, heirloom tomatoes, homemade fruit crumbles, an Irish cheese plate, apple juice and craft brewed beer.
The Eat-In will be followed by a panel discussion on how food is eaten, processed and produced. The panel will include Trevor Sargent, Junior Minister of State for Food And Horticulture, celebrity chef Clodagh McKenna and Bord Bia. Whilst there is no charge for the food, there is a suggested donation of €15 for the event which will enable the producers to get a fair price for the food supplied and allow the consumer to put a real price on the food they receive.
