Discover Tuscany Slowly

Tuscany is the region of sprawling vineyards, rolling hills, charming old cities, masterpieces of art, culinary specialties and prestigious wines. In a seven-day tour, visitors can explore this region the “slow” way in a tour organized by Slow Travel, Slow Food Italy’s project that caters to travelers wanting to discover the authenticity and little-known aspects of Italy’s regions.
The tour, which begins on April 28, includes a visit to magnificent Florence, the “Cradle of the Renaissance”; Siena, famous for the Palio horse race; the Chianti area, Montepulciano and Montalcino, known world-over for their prestigious wines; and San Gimignano, a UNESCO world heritage site.
Participants will have the unique opportunity to sample several Slow Food Presidia products – high-quality, traditional foods at risk of extinction – and other local delicacies from Slow Food’s network of quality producers, such as the Certaldo onion, the Pienza pecorino cheese, the wine of Nobile di Montepulciano, Brunello and Bolgheri vineyards, and gelato from Florence’s oldest ice cream parlor, “Perché no!”
The group will visit local wineries; sample excellent wines, cured meats, cheeses and olive oils and shop for delicacies in the many bakeries, pastry shops, fresh produce markets and more. Participants will also taste the delicious, authentic dishes of the regional cuisine dining at locations highlighted in Slow Food’s “Osterie d’Italia” guide – small local restaurants that still cook using traditional recipes and fresh, local produce. The itinerary also includes visiting the most interesting monuments, works of art, churches and natural landscapes of the region.

The Tuscany tour has been organized by Slow Food Travel, a Slow Food project that organizes itineraries in Italy that help travelers to discover less celebrated destinations or little known aspects of the most visited areas. It allows participants to discover the authenticity of a region by tapping into Slow Food’s local network of food producers, winemakers, farmers, artisans and restaurateurs who, through their daily work, promote the local food culture and protect quality traditional products in their regions.
