Dig In!

This Saturday thousands of people across the USA are joining together at community events for Slow Food USA’s Dig In, a national day of action featuring over 160 events nationwide. The theme of the day is “break ground, break bread”. At every event, the community will break ground on a project that connects people with where their food comes from, and then break bread at the end of the day to celebrate.

“On the back of recent events such as the egg recall scandal, Slow Food USA is seeing a dramatic rise in membership and participation in local food projects,” said Josh Viertel, President of Slow Food USA. “More and more people are wanting to know the story behind their food.”

In Columbia, Missouri, the local Slow Food chapter is building a greenhouse for an elementary school to kick off their “harvest of the month” program. In Salt Lake City, Utah, organizers are hosting a “Building a Better Lunch Box” fair, where interactive demos and workshops will teach families to cook and will build support for healthier school lunches.

In New York, participants are painting murals, building compost bins, and erecting a chicken coop for their “Urban-style Barn Raising”.

Slow Food USA fuels a powerful grassroots movement that has grown exponentially in recent years, now constituting 225 convivia and a community of 200 000 supporters nation-wide.
