Designing the Future

Slow Food was announced the winner of a new award in the prestigious ADI Compasso d’Oro Awards yesterday in Rome, the oldest and most coveted industrial design award internationally.

Established in 1954 to recognize excellence in Italian design, this year the organizers created a special new award for the design of services. “With this award, we are recognizing Slow Food’s capacity to create processes that integrate ethics and strategy. We are rewarding the thinking that guides the movement, the quest for sustainability and quality of life,” explained Louise Bocchietto, President of ADI.

On accepting the award, Slow Food president Carlo Petrini said: “We have great pride in accepting this first Compasso d’Oro Award for the design of services. They have recognized our projects and our ability to transform Slow Food ideas and philosophy into practice. We need to conceive and create new paradigms for the future and it is significant that the design world is beginning to recognize these new priorities.”

Slow Food, with its many projects, including the Earth Markets, the Presidia, A Thousand Gardens in Africa and Terra Madre, has developed a service model that combines quality relationships with the needs of sustainable agricultural systems, creating a collaborative environment where critical consumers and producers work together in a convivial way.

The Golden Compass prizes are awarded based on a pre-selection made by the ADI Permanent Observatory of Design, consisting of a commission of experts, designers, critics, historians, specialized journalists who are engaged in collecting information and selecting the best products that may be published on the ADI Design Index.

The international jury of this 22nd Compasso d’Oro was headed by Arturo Dell’Acqua Bellavitis and Chantal Clavier Hamaide, Umberto Croppi Guto Indio Da Costa, Pierre Keller, Cecilie Manz, Clive Roux, Shiling Zheng.
