Carlo Petrini Conferred Honor in Vienna

On September 6 Carlo Petrini, founder and president of the Slow Food movement, received the Trophée Gourmet A La Carte in Vienna at the Hofburg imperial palace.

During his acceptance speech in front of an audience of nearly 1,000 people, Petrini stressed the importance of the role of farmers in gastronomy. “These awards celebrate high quality and creative gastronomy, but we must not forget that all this is only possible thanks to farmers all over the world, as raw material is essential for achieving culinary excellence. Our first priority must be to support farmers, who in turn play a vital part in safeguarding the environment”.

The award is bestowed directly by the editors of the magazine A La Carte to an honorary international guest. This year they decided that gastronomy must consider the broader context of quality, sustainability and social justice, principles that Carlo Petrini promotes throughout the world with Slow Food and that are exemplified in Terra Madre, world meeting of food communities. Previous winners include Paul Bocuse, Angelo Gaja, Eckart Witzigmann and Luigi Veronelli.

The magazine, founded in 1988, has been holding the Trophée Gourmet A La Carte event to honour exceptional national accomplishments in food, wine and hospitality for 18 years. The event has become a veritable culinary “Oscars”: as well as the honorary international award the magazine’s editors nominate three candidates for each of the six national categories, and an Austrian jury selects the winners. The envelopes containing the names of the winners are opened during the gala evening.
