10 Things to Eat! Before They Die

20 May 2008

At 7pm on Thursday May 22, chefs at the Marriott Hotel, Gosforth Park, Newcastle (UK), will cook a special dinner to conclude the EAT! NewcastleGateshead food festival.

In association with Slow Food UK and the annual NECTA chef competition, the gala dinner, ‘10 Things to Eat! Before They Die’, will feature a selection of products now made by only a small handful of artisan producers. Around 20 of them are taken from Slow Food’s Ark of Taste.

The menu includes Herdwick mutton, Guatemalan Huehuetenango coffee, Spanish Ballobar capers, Jersey Royal potatoes, Herat raisins from Afghanistan, Irish raw milk cheese and young asparagus grown on the sand dunes of Formby in Lancashire.

The event, organized by Simon Preston, director of the food festival, will provide an opportunity to explore the stories behind these unique ingredients and promote the work of Slow Food and the Ark of Taste in rediscovering, cataloguing, describing and publicizing forgotten flavors.

‘It’s going to be a thought-provoking occasion,’ said Preston. ‘We’ll be well fed but interested and challenged as well. We face an increasingly homogenized, globalized world of food, and this is a way to help these admirable producers and show that their food genuinely does taste different, and better.’

The evening will also feature a sparkling canapé reception, entertainment from magicians and musicians, the festival award ceremony and food goodie bags to take home.
