Our Coffee

The Slow Food Coffee Coalition aims to create connections and improve the relationship between producers and consumers. As the name ‘coalition’ already suggests, it’s an inclusive network open to people from different backgrounds and expertise that want to make a significant impact, together.

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: 

    In July 2022 Slow Food Coffee Coalition staff, experts and facilitators did the training on PGS and presented the structure to the Slow Food Community. The Slow Food Community read and shared among its participants the materials provided during the first training: PGS manual, good, clean and fair coffee production guidelines, and PGS pledge. The Ethical Committee signed the production guidelines and PGS pledge. Then, technicians discussed the Guarantee Sheet making some changes. The Guarantee group tried out the first field visits to the producers the 22nd of July 2022, completing the first trial of PGS for the batch of Terra Madre 2022. Field visits to other producers will continue in the coming years.

    Farming system: The coffee is grown in the shade in an agroforestry system, intercropped with other trees such as: jack fruit, pepper, Lemon, Soap nut, Orange, Mango, Gauva, custard apple, silver oak, millets.

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: In early 2022, the community decided to take part in the Slow Food Coffee Coalition’s PGS initiative, and did so by signing the Good, Clean and Fair Coffee Guidelines. Each producer signed a commitment to take part in PGS. After that, the Community formed the Ethical Committee, which also signed the PGS commitment. The Guarantee Group conducted field visits to the 10 producers in March 2022, completing the first PGS process for 2022.

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: Since its creation, the Slow Food Community in Las Capucas is carrying on their PGS initiative to guarantee that the coffee produced from the farmers taking part to the initiative is following the Coffee Coalition of good, clean and fair coffee.

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: In the first half of August 2022, the Slow Food Commuunity decided to establish a PGS initiative and formed Ethical Commitee. This group signed the good, clean and fair coffee guidelines of the SFCC and the PGS pledge, taking officially part to the first PGS pilot initiative. Druing the month of August 2022 the community members in the Guarantee Group carried out field visits to four different producers.

    Participatory Guarantee System Initiative: In April 2022, the Bosque, Niebla y Café Xalapa Community was the promoter of the creation of a National Ethical Committee for Mexico, of which they are a member, together with roasters, producers, univeristy professors and coffee and agroecology experts around Mexico.

    In June 2022 the local community created the local Ethical Committee, whosee majority of the member are small-holders producers of the indigenous peoples náhuatl.

    They have signed the PGS pledge. To date, one producer family was the first to join the initiative.

    The 22nd of June 2022, the Guarantee Group carried out the field visits and the PGS process for 2022 and batch  for Terra Madre was concluded.

    Participatory Guarantee System Initiative: In January 2023, Community of “Producers of Sustainable Coffee in Cuaxtla Sierra Negra” was founded.

    The first pilot visits were carried out, on January 17th, to the first two producers in collaboration with the members of the Advisory Board of the National Ethical Committee in Mexico.

    Nimi Juba, Guardianes de bosques comestibles cafetaleros de la Montaña de Guerrero
    Members of the original Me ́phaa people of the Montaña region of the state of Guerrero in Mexico. The community is made up of young people of different ages, professions, trades and experiences, and together they share knowledge and practices to improve their livelihoods but above all they share strong bonds of friendship and family. Coffee production is one of their common tasks and they carry it out in a sustainable way within their edible forests, as a result of the ancestral knowledge of their grandmothers and grandfathers.

    This community arose from the Catuaí Amarilo S.S.S. organization, made up of 16 members. Thirty-three years ago, this organization emerged in the context of the search for market alternatives after the disappearance of the Mexican Coffee Institute (INMECAFE), which was an institution that provided technical assistance and commercialization of coffee production. In 2002, they obtained organic and fair trade certification, that they have maintained to this day.

    Initiative of the Participatory Guarantee System:

    In March 2022, Mercon’s LIFT platform, facilitated training on PGS and Slow Food and presented the structure to the Slow Food Community. The Slow Food Community decided to establish its own PGS initiative and elected its Ethical Committee. The Guarantee Group and the producers carried out the first field visits to producers in three stages, completing the first PGS trial.

    Villa Rica Sustainable Coffee

    Cultivation method: Coffee is grown in the shade in a consociated agroforestry system with primary and secondary shade plants and fruits such as for example pacae, passion fruit, orange, avocado, wild strawberries, vegetables.

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: In July 2021, the Slow Food Community “Slow Food Café Sustentable Villa Rica” representatives decided to start a PGS initiative. As a first activity, together with a group of experts and roasters, they carried out the trial of a field visit to the producer of La Chacra d’Dago, completing the Guarantee Sheet. In 2023, they plan to enlarge and include in the PGS activities other farms in the surrouding area.

    2024 lot: Wiracocha

    Inspired by Inca’s history Don Dagoberto Marin called this lot “Wiracocha” which name means “God of the Sun”during Inca Empire.
    Located in the village of El Palomar, just 30 minutes from of Villa Rica, at an altitude of
    1,700 m above sea level there is an extension of 8 hectares of coffee plantation.
    Since 2020 the plot has been managed by Cesar Marin and Don Dago in an regenerative
    agriculture way, Organic & Biodynamic practices , so that within the farm the native shade varieties of the broadleaf forest are preserved, combined with fruit trees that serve as a refuge for many
    species of wildlife that inhabit the area. the region, as well as migratory birds.
    There are different varieties on the Plot but The Catigua & Tabi are the best adapted to this region and presents the best quality both varieties is treated with Biol (Organic Fertilizers) and Compost and the beans are picked selectively.

    Coffee: Arabica

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative: In December 2023, the Slow Food Community “Slow Food Caficultore de Alto Chirumbia San Martín” representatives decided to start a PGS initiative. As a first activity, together with a group of experts, producers and members of the community, they carried out the first field visit to Finca Chirilomba (producer: Edwin Quea), completing the Guarantee Sheet. Then, another 8 farms were included in the initiative.

    Lot 2024

    Origin: Alto Chirumbia San Martín, La convención, Cusco, Peru

    Quantity: 10 micro batches totaling 100 bags. They are single varieties, selected by Edwin Quea Pacco owner of Finca Chiriloma, QGrader , CoE judge and owner of Origen Quea Coffee Company, exporter and Training School.

    Cultivation method: the lots are grown in shade, inside the forest, in the area of Alto Chirumbia San Martin, Quellouno district, La Convencion, Cusco Region.

    Altitude: from 1750 to 1950 mt elevation.

    The selection and process was done on site.

    Harvesting took place between June and September 2023

    Process: washed, fermented, after picking, for 24 to 48 hours in tanks and then washed and dried for 12 days. Fermentation was done with minimal use of water, without soaking. Each producer’s batch is individual and single variety.

    Varieties grown: Bourbon, Pacamara, Java, Geisha, Caturra,SL28, Mundonovo amarillo and rojo, Typica, Catimor.

    Maejentai Sustainable Coffee Producers

    The community was founded to promote the inclusiveness regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age or religion. This community also aims to work with all stakeholders to access necessary tools and knowledge for pursuing sustainable coffee cultivation as well as applying the Slow Food philosophy of Good, Clean, and Fair Coffee for all. 

    Their objective is to:

    1) create agroforestry to sustain an environment and income for our community
    2) build sustainable community through intergrated coffee cultivation and direct trade
    3) Empower youth and young people to establish careers though sustainable agriculture
    4) co-create a sustainable products from an indigenpus community

    Mount Elgon Nyasaland Coffee community

    Farming system: The coffee is grown in the shade in an agroforestry system, intercropped with: Cordia Africana / Kiki khili; Ficus Natalensis / Shikaile tree; Makhamia / Lusambya or Lusora; Albizia / Kumulukhu (Shilukhu); Khutoto; Kisoyo (Ficus spp); Fruit trees except mangoes.

    Altitude: 1,260-1,550 masl

    Participatory Guarantee System initiative:

    The Mount Elgon Nyasaland Coffee decided to start a PGS initiative after attending a PGS workshop provided by Slow Food Uganda. The community group created the Ethical Committe and signed the PGS pledge in March 2022.

    The Ethical Committee is formed by a technitian, four farmers and a youth leader.
