Animal welfare is a core component to Slow Food’s good, clean and fair approach to food production and consumption. Our main areas of action focus on:

  • Working with producers of the Slow Food Presidia project to have direct impact on the conditions in which their animals are raised. We are working on reviewing the production protocols of Presidia involving livestock by 2020, to ensure they are compliant with good animal welfare practices.
  • Promoting educational initiatives on animal welfare and meat consumption for adults and children. Through targeted campaigns, we want to raise awareness among consumers on the importance of reducing meat consumption and choosing meat from farms that pay particular attention to high quality, natural feed and the natural behavior of animals.
  • Supporting efforts to request mandatory labeling of products that specify methods of production. Slow Food’s narrative labels are a positive example of a labeling system that allows consumers to easily understand where food comes from and how it was produced.
