Fishing Communities, Academics and Experts Gather at Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2012

Sustainable fishing management and responsible fish consumption will be one of the topics to take centre stage at this year’s Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre in Turin, Italy, from October 25-29.  Through conferences, workshops and stands in the Marketplace, fishers, academics and experts from around the world will gather to exchange knowledge, confront best practices and denounce current fishing techniques and policies that are putting the oceans as well as the livelihood of fishing communities from around the world under great pressure.


A special area at the event will be dedicated to Slow Fish, Slow Food’s campaign for sustainable fish. It will be a point of reference for whoever wishes to learn more on the subject and will also feature workshops by fishers and leading experts in the field. More than fifty representatives of fishing communities will take part in activities in the area, including a workshop on FAO’s voluntary guidelines for small-scale fisheries.


A focal moment will be the conference, The Guardians of the Oceans, which will be held on Friday, October 26 at 3pm and will discuss the individual and collective responsibility towards the oceans and will present many concrete examples through the voices of the guest speakers.


Fish will also be the theme of several Taste Workshops: Classic Pairings: Bread and Herrings from Northern Germany, to discover the German and Dutch tradition of brined sprats, matjes and bratheringe; A Journey Through Brittany, to taste natural oysters bred in the open sea; Gianfranco Pascucci and Lazio’s Regional Catch, to explore the riches of Lazio’s coastline and waters that still teem with many fish species; From Mountain to Lake, bringing together Valtellina buckwheat and smoked sardines from Lake Iseo and The Bounty of Torre Guaceto, featuring recipes from the fishing community of this marine protected area in the region of Apulia. In the International and Italian Marketplaces visitors will also be able to taste and buy the products from various Slow Food Presidia: Sunnmøre Cured and Smoked Herring from Norway, Oosterschelde Lobster from the Netherlands; Traditional Cetara Anchovy Extract, Imraguen Women’s Mullet Bottarga from Mauritania and Tuscan Sea Palamita, to name a few.


Slow Food has been working in the field of sustainable fish for many years, raising awareness among seafood-lovers through the biennial Slow Fish fair in Genoa and developing projects to support responsible artisanal fishing communities. The association has recently joined OCEAN2012, a coalition dedicated to ensuring that the 2012 reform of the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) stops overfishing, ends destructive fishing practices and delivers fair and equitable use of healthy fish stocks. Representatives of Ocean2012 will be present at Salone del Gusto and Terra Madre 2012 to call for European Institutions to take the opportunity of the CFP reform to recover the well-being of the seas and support small-scale fishing communities that are under increasing strain.
