Brief description
In the 50 years the "Old Red House maize" was very popular for tasty corn polenta dishes. In the early 60s he was ousted from hybrid varieties and disappeared. In 2004 Slow Food Styria purchased from an organic farmer in Kirchschlag about 1 kg of seeds of this variety and went to seed in order to find a suitable organic farm. Since the conservation of purity to other maize fields distances of about 500 to 700 meters must be observed, it was not easy to win a suitable organic farm for seed.
Finally Slow Food in Styria found one at Birkfeld . In 2005 Karl Geiregger sowed for the first time the "Red House maize. The yield was rather low. On the one hand, family Geireggers fields below to about 750 meters above sea level, on the other hand, the corn kernels found in crows great popularity.
A portion of the seed wa given from Slow Food Styria to the Agricultural College Old Grotto in Graz-Wetzelsdorf where teacher Ing Andreas Reisenhofer continues the seed in a school project. Now the "Old Red House maize" is saved and available again in small amounts.
