Connecting U.S. Food Communities

From May 16 to 19, Slow Food USA leaders and volunteers are gathering in New Orleans for their 2013 National Leadership Conference. The theme of the conference is “Connecting Food Communities,” which highlights a renewed emphasis on connecting with local food networks throughout the United States. Through presentations, workshops, discussions and cultural excursions, the national office hopes to inspire and empower network leaders and allies to increase their involvement in their local food communities. Of particular interest and focus will be caring for and engaging those who have not always been included in these conversations and who have not had an equal place at the table. At the U.S. conference, there will be 18 workshops from which attendees can select three to attend. These workshops will cover international initiatives, biodiversity, policy campaigns and the mechanics of running a successful Slow Food chapter, among other topics. Additionally, woven throughout the conference is a focus on the Ark of Taste. Conference attendees will be able to attend a workshop on the Ark of Taste project and U.S. Ark products will be featured at all meals. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the National Leadership Conference will aim to reconnect our network with one another, as a community. Not only is a convening like this an opportunity to teach and listen, it is also a way to revitalize our relationships and renew our commitment to good, clean and fair food for all.
