CHEESE 2005 – Last Day Roundup

According to official data, despite the rain that plagued much of the event, about 100,000 people attended ‘Slow 2005’.

As Slow Food president Carlo Petrini explained, “Visitors deserve a gold medal because they weren’t frightened by the weather and also because of the great interest they showed”.

More foreigners — particularly Germans, French and Swiss — attended, accounting for about 20% of the total, while journalists were present from newspapers and periodicals in Great Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia, Greece, Norway and Switzerland.

Educational initiatives and the Slow Food Presidia — especially Bagòss di Bagolino (Brescia), Graukase (Alto Adige) and Geitost (Norway) — all attracted huge crowds.

12,000 people entered the ‘Great Hall of Cheese’ to taste the 157 cheeses on offer (especially the Polish Slow Food Presidium Oscypek and the Portuguese Queso de serra estrella), washing them down with 30,000 glasses of wine.

Last but by no means least, this year’s novelty, the ‘House of Goat’s Cheeses’, recorded 5.200 tastings of 105 products from 20 countries, from Japan to the USA. The most popular offerings were those from Belgium, the Canary Islands, Sweden and Norway, along with Callu de cabrettu and Robiola di Roccaverano (Italy) and Fromage cathar, brought by the French maître affineur Hervé Mons.
