Cheese 2007 Opens on Friday September 21 with Three Important Events

Italy - 18 Sep 07

The sixth edition of Cheese kicks off today, Friday September 21, in Bra, and three important events will mark the inauguration. At 11.45am at the Press Office (Palazzo Mathis, Corso Cottolengo) there will be a press conference entitled GMOs, an ongoing fight: a member of the European Parliament speaks at Cheese. Speaking at the conference will be Marie-Hélène Aubert, vice-president of the Green Party and spokesperson on organics in the European Parliament. Aubert was responsible for the presentation of the amendment to the Organic Regulation which asked for the introduction of a 0.1% threshold for GMO products in organic food, aimed at preventing contamination and guaranteeing certainty for consumers. The amendment was approved in parliament by a wide majority. The decision of the Council of EU Agriculture Ministers established that the threshold can rise to 0.9%, repudiating the vote of the elected representatives of the people of Europe. Participating in the conference will be Carlo Petrini, President of Slow Food, and Roberto Burdese, President of Slow Food Italia, who will present the campaign ItalyEurope — GMO-free (www.liberidaogm.org) and will explain how visitors to Cheese can take part in the initiative, expressing their desire for a good, clean, fair and GMO-free development of agriculture by voting using cards available at points throughout Bra. Later in the day, at 2.45pm, another press conference will be held at the Press Office, when the Italian Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies, Paolo De Castro, together with Carlo Petrini and Camillo Scimone, Mayor of the City of Bra, will meet with journalists. The official inauguration of Cheese will follow, at around 3.15pm, on the terrace above the porticoes of Corso Garibaldi. The following speakers are scheduled: Camillo Scimone, Mayor of the City of Bra Ferruccio Dardanello, President of the Cuneo Chamber of Commerce Aldo Sartore, President of the Ente Turismo Alba Bra Langhe e Roero Raffaele Costa, President of the Province of Cuneo Mercedes Bresso, President of the Region of Piedmont Carlo Petrini, President of Slow Food Paolo De Castro, Italian Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry Policies Additionally it is now possible to download the Day by Day at Cheese 2007, an invaluable resource for journalists, which lists all the meetings, conferences and workshops held over the four days of international exhibition dedicated to all things cheese-related.
