GMOS in Organic Agriculture at the European Parliament: a step forward on the road to tolerance zero

The European Parliament sent out an important signal in today’s voting when it passed an amendment to the regulation on organic agriculture lowering the maximum allowable figure for accidental contamination by GMOs from 0.9 to 0.1 by a large majority. ‘It’s a very important result,’ commented Carlo Petrini, president of Slow Food International, ‘one we’ve been working towards for a long time now both nationally, with Slow Food Italy’s entry into the ‘GMO-Free’ coalition, and at a European level, with the support of all our national associations.’ Petrini, who in his speech at the inauguration of the Biofach world organic agriculture fair in Germany called for tolerance zero, believes that today’s vote ‘marks an important step forward towards the Europe we’d like to see, a Europe that listens to the opinions and needs of its citizens and producers. As far as we’re concerned, we intend to reassert our positions over and over again. The next occasion to do so will be in Montpellier on April 14 and 15 with Vignerons d’Europe, a productive category that has a lot to say and a lot to listen to apropos organic production and the rejection of GMOs.’ ‘The agreement reached today,’ concluded Petrini, ‘is, de facto, a “technical zero”: all that remains now is to wait for the final pronouncement of the European Council of Ministers which, I hope, will continue in this direction by declaring tolerance zero on GMOs in organic agriculture.’
