Salone del Gusto presented in Hollywood

- 15 Jul 02

On the eve of American independence day last week Slow Food International and Slow Food USA presented the first ever Salone del Gusto Press Conference in Los Angeles. Danilo Terribili's Alto Palato restaurant hosted the press conference, where Los Angelenos learned about the Salone and tasted some of the wines, beers, and foods that will be featured at the October event.
Hollywood convivium leader Panos Nicolaou and Los Angeles leader Evan Kleiman opened the conference with a brief introduction to the Slow Food movement and a description of the activities of Slow Food in Southern California. Roberto Burdese, who leads Slow Food's promotional offices in Bra, then took the stage with a presentation of the Salone del Gusto 2002. Vice -president Silvio Barbero also gave a moving speech about the long term goals of the Slow Food movement and the current decline in the world's food biodiversity. To round things off, the 35 participants in the Los Angeles conference were treated to a special screening of the winner of the Slow Food on Film 'Golden Snail' Award, 'Peperoni'. The Press Conference featured Italian sparkling wines from Contratto and Ca' del Bosco and cheeses from Parmigiano Reggiano and Occelli. A range of West Coast products balanced the Italian specialties: Arrogant Bastard and India Pale Ales from Stone Brewing Co. (San Diego), and Zinfandel from Dry Creek vineyard (Sonoma) as well as fine goat cheese from Sonoma's Andante Dairy and wild smoked salmon from Alaska Seafood.
