Animal Welfare and Products

Each year the welfare of the millions of animals raised for their milk, meat and eggs for human consumption is seriously, and often savagely, abused. Furthermore, the way we treat farm animals and process animal products is inextricably linked to our general wellbeing: from human health to environmental sustainability, social justice to food security.

Animals are sentient beings and we owe them a life free of pain and fear, in which they are free to express their natural behaviour as much as possible. With the 2009 Treaty of Lisbon the European Union confirmed animal welfare as fundamental, and to be considered at the same level as the protection of human health. However, despite this important move, minimum welfare conditions are still not guaranteed far too often.

For both small- and large-scaler farmers, making animal welfare a priority is an added value. Good living conditions for animals means better health and less stress for the animals and subsequently less disease and use of drugs, lower production costs and improved product quality in terms of both taste and nutrition.

Slow Food is not calling for a world without meat, but the meat-producing system Slow Food envisages differs sharply from the one now practiced in the developed world. Choosing to eat less but better meat, and favoring local breeds where possible, can have a big impact.
