Sensory
Education in Brest (Belarus)
Created by Slow Food Belarus convivium in 2008, this
project provides a hands-on course for secondary school
students that builds knowledge of the region’s
local food culture, improves the daily diet of families
in the region and empowers young people to play a role
in the future direction of the local food system.
Trialed with one public secondary school in 2008, the
project’s innovative approach to sensory education
was found to be very successful. Teachers and parents
have noted a marked change in the attitude of the young
students and the University of California are carrying
our research on the impact of the project. In 2009 the
project continued with 120 students at the Berioza Secondary
School N°3.
Funds are being raised to expand the project to three
more schools in the Brest region in 2010, and to improve
the program by adding school gardens and field trips
to the curriculum.
The funding being sought for the continuation
and expansion of this project in 2010 is 13,600 euro,
according to the following breakdown:.
- Products and supplies € 3,600
- Cookery, classroom and school garden teachers €
3,000
- Field trips for children and transportation €
2,000
- Equipment and educational materials € 2,800
- Personnel costs € 400
- Community awareness-raising activities € 800
